lake chatuge

i didn't do my long run this week. i don't have a great excuse -- it rained when i wanted to run and when it finally stopped i didn't feel like it anymore. i'm coddling myself by saying thursday's 12+mile interval workout is good enough.

josh and i went for a weekend getaway to the ridges resort on lake chatuge with plans of boating, horseback riding, wine tasting, hiking, and that long run of course.

however --
a) it rained/thunderstormed the entire time.
b) i forgot my wallet and therefore had no id to prove i was of legal boozing age.

i'd also managed to forget a book and the past 6-months of runner's world magazines that i haven't read yet, so we basically went out of town to watch tv.

michaelee's chocolate cafe
while it rained saturday morning, i got in 10-mins on the recumbent bike and 30-mins on the elliptical in the resort gym sauna. we lunched at michaelee's chocolate cafe in "town" and around 5pm the rain stopped briefly enough to squeeze in a short run along the lake before dinner.

we had dinner at the oaks (the restaurant at the resort) where the hostess was amazingly horrible.

pop quiz:
you are working the hostess stand at a restaurant. couple #1 has a 7:30 reservation and arrives at 7:30. couple #2 has an 8:00 reservation and arrives at 7:45. who do you seat when a table opens up at 8:00?
a) couple #2
b) couple #2; you are confused as to why this is even a multiple choice question

anyway, the hostess was not a reflection on the oaks restaurant as a whole. our server was great and the food was tasty.

the deluge resumed during dinner and we had to run back to the hotel while dodging lightning bolts. the rest of the weekend was pretty uneventful other than watching vcu upset kansas and kentucky take down unc. when we got back home sunday afternoon it was cloudy and chilly (where did you go 70 degree loveliness?) and i continued to cop out of my long run.

overall if you're looking for a weekend getaway, lake chatuge in hiawassee, ga (2-hrs from atlanta, 2-hrs from chattanooga) would be a good spot if the weather cooperates.

the sun pretended to make an appearance after we checked out

  2. How nice! I really need to get out of town for a break. Long run? I'd say 12 is long :)

  3. I sooooo need a vacation soon! That sucks that you forgot your book and magazines! And, the correct answer is to pick #1, right?

  4. Haha, when Clay and I went on our last cruise, we spent one night just watching movies in the room and laying in bed together. With our schedules it's not very often we get to do that, so we totally said screw the shows and entertainment and watched The Blind Side instead, haha.

That resort looks super nice! It sounds like you guys had a great time too, besides the hostess. Hotel gyms are always the worst too with feeling like saunas, so not fun!

  5. I went to Lake Chatuge a few years back for a work conference. I have always loved North GA for a small town, laid back kind of trip. Sorry the weather didn't cooperate. It was rather stormy this past weekend.

  6. Who better to give BQ advice than ChrisK? Of course now he wears green shoes and runs trails, so his advice might be suspect.

  8. First of all, be thankful you still get carded--it makes my day on that bi-annual event that I do! Sorry you had crappy weather and a crappy hostess! Otherwise sounded pretty nice!

  13. I need a "get out of town" weekend but will hope for better weather. I want a weekend with no TV. I hope to post an update on the friendship flag soon. Life has just been so busy.

  16. No reading material or running! What's a running girl to do? Hopefully you came home well rested and recharged!

  17. "so we basically went out of town to watch tv." <-- HAHAHAHAHA

That does suck though. And also a super big bummer you didn't have any ID! Hopefully you relaxed a little bit :P

Oh, and Eric LOVES going out of town to "watch TV" we don't have cable so whenever we get a hotel room he goes crazy flipping through the channels. Haha

  18. Oh, how I wish I got carded again:)
I officially unsubscribed to RW - all recycled info, all available on line. Oh, and I responded to Shawn. I just hope he will send me a link once he publishes his research on the blog...

  19. watching TV on vacation is my hubby's FAVORITE thing to do. I'm always like - "we can watch TV at home".

Loved the area! It looks beautiful if the weather is good. Sorry!

  20. No booze, no reading material? What's the point?

    At least there was food!

Glad you had a good time. The place looks so nice!

  21. Rain schmain - anyone over 21 who still needs ID to consume alcohol deserves a rained out weekend. Just sayin' - with love! ;O)

  22. I had to LOL at the line about leaving town to watch TV. I feel like we do that all the time... My husband seems to really like that (and apparently, based on comments, so do other husbands). I don't get it because we have a ton of channels at home, it's not like he's watching something new.

I'd count the 12 miles of intervals... because at this time in my life, a 12 mile run is a long run! (Okay, even if I'm training for a marathon I'd consider a 12-miler a long run!)

  23. Add a couple kids to this vacation and it would sound like a National Lampoon vacation. :)

How do you forget your ID??

    ReplyDelete
  24. 12 mile intervals? definitely a challenging workout. so i think you're off the hook for a LR. especially if i can get away with two short runs being my long run this week.

omg no booze? the horror! (and i'm being 100% serious with that)

  25. You didn't write about the chocolate cafe? That sounds promising.

Sorry you had such crappy weather.
Back when we got no tv reception up here in the hills going out of town to watch tv was big doings!

  26. Boo weather! I'm interested in the Chocolate cafe...

  27. I think a 12+ mile interval run is dang good enough. Lake Chatuge looks like a delightful place. I'm not so keen on rainy getaways either, but at least you got in some good dining and rest (I hope : )

  28. Uh, when one rules as much as you do, I dont think you need an excuse to say- I dont feel like running"

  30. Looks like a super place! Mother Nature always wins-at least you got away from it all, even if it was just to watch TV!

  31. Clicked on the resort link - such a pretty place even if you only saw it through the rain. Hope you filled up on chocolate at the chocolate cafe.

  32. I am sorry that your weekend got rained out... But at least the food was good right? ;-)

And the rain sure is a perfect excuse to be just lazy and sometimes that's exactly what the doctor ordered.

  33. i think every couple has to have one of those 'complete and utter fail' of a weekend getaway. hoping that was the last of that!

in other news, i ate an entire medium sized bag of peanut butter m&m's the other day(s). be proud.

  34. sometimes those kinds of weekends can be the best. You just get to relax!

  35. Sounds like a nice get away! Get that long run in!!:)

  36. You forgot your ID??? Next time send Josh to the liquor store, watch horrible reality TV and make up awesome drinking games. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oooh, vacay! Nice.
I've watched plenty of tv while away. It feels stupid but sometimes you just need to veg.

  38. Sorry about the weather. It's been raining here too. Long Runs? I can do this marathon with out them. lol. Seriously, my training has hit the bucket. Thanks for stopping by my blog, though I have been out for a while. Thanks for sharing about your getaway. Have a good one!

  39. Basically you went out of town to watch TV! Sadly, that sounds so enjoyable to me!!!!

You know I'm old and all so I rarely have to carry my ID-one of the perks.

Love the multiple choice question! That's a tough one.....whaaa??

Your Marlene workout session was tough!!! No breaks-can't do it, I'm all about the breaks.....Great pace:) Hope you have a great weekend:)

  40. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! And good for you for taking it easy. I, too, say Thursday's 12+mile interval workout is good enough. :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Haha, this sounds like the trip I just took. Well, kind of. I was away for work and pretty much spent the entire time in the hotel. The conference I was working was there, and in the evenings I was too tired to do anything other than chill in my room. I don't have the excuse of bad weather! I hope you two can get back there some time when the weather cooperates!

  42. continuing the comment storm, your picture makes an electrical storm seem so peaceful. dang, hope your next trip is sunny and bright.
